All through the 2026 World Cup group stage, this site lived on fine margins: points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then conduct, then a world ranking, all of it just to sort twelve third-placed teams into the eight that survived. The knockout threw every one of those tiebreakers out. Win and you went through. Lose and your run was over. In the end there was no table left to read, only the bracket.

Every country’s run is now complete. Its own quarter of the draw decided who could ever stand in its way: teams stranded on the far side, or bunched together elsewhere and knocking each other out, never reached it at all.
