Mexico opened their 2026 World Cup with a 2-0 win over South Africa, 46 places lower in the world ranking, then added a 1-0 win over South Korea on matchday 2. A 3-0 win over Czechia, 26 places lower in the world ranking, completed a spotless group stage for the Tri without conceding a single goal. Nine points and a goal difference of 6 were enough to top Group A and move into the knockout rounds.
Mexico opened the knockout stage with a 2-0 win over Ecuador, then pushed England all the way in the last 16 before losing a five-goal thriller 2-3. The world's fourth-ranked side proved a step too far for the Group A winners.
