Egypt opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Belgium, a side 20 places higher in the world ranking. A 3-1 win over New Zealand followed on matchday 2, and the Pharaohs closed out the group stage with a 1-1 draw against Iran, who sit 9 places higher in the world ranking. Those five points from three matches were enough to finish as runners-up in Group G, sending them into the knockout rounds.
